Due to optimal design of the deck where the reinforcement is protected by the undersurface of lightweight concrete, the SL-Deck can live up to 4 hours standard fire without any additional fireproofing measures. In contrast ordinary hollow-core slabs only live up to 1 hour and is not only time consuming but also very expensive for the contractor to insulate the decks on site. The SL-Deck is superior not only to hollow-core slabs but also any other prestressed deck and makes it possible to reduce installation time as well as total costs.

High fire resistance is vital

Fire safety has become an important subject for load-bearing structures, because application of low-energy windows that do not break in fire, heavy insulation in the facades, light-weight aerated concrete walls and step-noise insulated floors means that the fires become hot and give rise to long time exposures, which means violent damageson structures. The damaging effect on a concrete structure of a fire in an ordinary modern domestic building has for these reasons at least become equivalent to a 120 min standard fire requirement, where a requirement of 60 min usually was more than sufficient before energy saving windows became common.
